  • Isn’t increasing the grades just like that against the law?

  • Life for a student gets tougher once they reach high school. This is when things start to get complicated. Then after high school, one needs to give a serious thought about college and so on. Take the law students for example, who are now very happy or at least some students belonging to particular law schools are happy.

Law students have to struggle a lot. Firstly they need to make sure they get really good grades and then hopefully make it into a good law college in the country. This is no piece of cake really. When one is studying law, they need to make sure they get good grades always else their future in the job market will surely be bleak.

But recently, the law colleges in the country have come up with a new system. When they calculate a student’s score, they add 0.333 to every score and the result is; higher and better scores in tests and exams when compared to other colleges and universities. This is not something the students are themselves; hence it is done by the college authorities. So when the students get their rate cards or their scores, they are definitely on the higher side.

But why are the colleges doing so? Is it because the actual scores are really low or are the students so bad that they cannot go beyond a particular number? No, fortunately none of these reasons are true. The colleges have themselves devised the scoring system so as to add to the actual score. So by getting high scores, they students get a better chance at the job market. Of course the students are kicked about. High scores are always welcome and when they compare it with friends in law colleges who have not adopted these techniques, they are gratified to know that they have done better.

On the job scene, the competition gets tougher by the day. And the law firms hiring students are no fools. Many of them are aware of the new scoring pattern and therefore, do not take the high scores into consideration during interviews. But these law firms are a handful and those who do not know of these; continue to prefer students who have scored higher.

However, these high scores do not determine whether the student is smart or is smarter than the student from the other college who has not scored so much. So basically this scoring system is not getting anyone anywhere but just acts as a false gratification.

Some professors feel that this scoring pattern should be stopped right away as it is unfair to the other students. When the student gets into the law school, each one of them has to give the same kind of tests and therefore, they are at par with each other. So these scores do not determine anything in the end. It is important to remember that just because a student scores a little lower, it does not mean he or she is a loser.
