  • Is it time to revamp our public school system?

  • It is clearly evident how our schools are messed up due to the jumping of track by our progressive education. Progressive education by the way operates under the assumption that all children should perform equally well.

    In every little aspect that goes into making public schools, we have this idea built in. It is because of this that parents are given limited choice with regard to public education as opposed to higher education. It is important to first consider the way resources are allocated and measured and expenditure per pupil on an average.

    Most of the accountability models we use today are based on our obsession for equal results. For instance, “minimum proficiency” is what is used in North Carolina. Every child is pushed to reach a minimum level by schools. There is no system that measures the extent to which individual children are capable of going beyond that.

    It was not until recently that we bothered to measure the number of students who progress to the extent they are supposed to in a year. This idea is in fact being just developed even though we have access to this technology for decades.

    The average is a pervasive measure used predominantly in American public education. Every child today is required to score the same as every other child in keeping with the progressive idea. This idea is in fact nothing but mathematical terms and does not take into account individual student capability. For some, minimum requirement may just be much above the average.

    Rather than spending a fortune on remedial programs in an attempt to get children to scale up to average, it is a good idea spending on “gifted programs”. If we find that we cannot bring enough of them to “average”, we just lower standards and change label to “minimum proficiency”.

    Content of the computer programs, textbooks and curriculum is focused on a level that is easy for most people to succeed. “Over achievers” are kids who perform above the set standard and do better than expected.

    The student assignment issue raging at the Wake County is equally foolish and ridiculous. This does not stop at Wake County. I n a bid to keep balance among schools, students is inundated with constant assignments at Pitt County. In fact this country is notorious for treating students like slaves in this aspect.

    The absurd position of NAACP with regard to the controversy in Wake County is to be noted too. You know what is a bad thing for them? It is disproportionately black poor kids attending schools where they are the majority. Mix them up with wealthier kids who score better and average out the school score and all is fine for the State President of NAACP.

    If we look for such absurdities, we could find plenty of them. “Achievement gap” is a fraudulent term that signifies nothing but the fact that our education system is self destructing. Any opportunity is snatched away from the good students by public school bureaucrats to help students who under perform as a direct result of this fraud.
